Break ups suck. It can be a serious emotional ride dealing with all the ups and downs. It’s pretty common to want to know some signs your ex wants you back or might otherwise be having second thoughts about the breakup. Especially if you are deeply in love with them or thought that everything seemed to be going fine. Here are a few things to look for that may mean that your ex wants you back.

#1 – The Break Up Was Sudden
If your ex broke up with you out of the blue, this is one of the signs he wants you back because it means that the break up was a very emotional decision on his part.
He didn’t think about it very hard and in the heat of the moment, he probably got frustrated and decided to leave.
When we make emotional decisions, we often tend to regret them or second-guess ourselves. I’m not just making this up either! There are a bunch of very smart people that have reached the same conclusion (here’s a study on the effects of emotion-based decision-making in the stock market).
#2 – The Two of You Very Emotional Before or After the Break Up
Building off that last point, highly emotional interactions, like arguing, fighting, crying, hot-cold sentiments right before or after the break up mean that the choice was probably very emotion-driven.
Plus, it means that your ex is probably very conflicted about the break up. If they loved you one minute, then hated you the next, they are still trying to make up their mind about if it was a good idea.
#3 – They Still Want to Be Friends
Another one of the big signs your ex wants you back is when they still want to be friends with you.
Why is this important?
Because your ex still wants to keep in touch with you. This means that they still like you. And if they like you, you can still get them back.
If your ex absolutely refuses to have anything to do with you, that is a bad sign, but if they still want to be friends with you and have you as a part of their life, then this is really an invitation to work things out with them.
#4 – Hot-Cold Behavior
If your ex absolutely hates your guts one minute and then the next they are telling you how much they miss you and want to try to work things out, then this is a sign that they are conflicted themselves about how they feel. And this can be a major sign your ex wants you back.
What this usually means is that they still do care for you, but that negative feelings have been piled on top of that love.
All you need to do is overcome those negative emotions and the love they already feel for you will start to come back.
#5 – They Are Competitive with You
The last of the 5 signs your ex wants you back is that your ex might be trying to compete with you to show you how fast they are moving on with their life or how much better they are doing than you after the break up.
This is a sign because it shows that they still care about your opinion or about your reaction to things.
Although watching them trying to make you feel jealous is not going to feel good, it is definitely a huge signal that they still care and that you can work things out with them (if you want to).
The bottom line is you need to read between the lines to find signs your ex wants you back. He isn’t likely going to come straight out and say it, so he is going to be very indirect about it hoping that you will will make the first move toward reuniting.
You really need to pay attention only to how he behaves and not to what he says. Remember that old saying “actions speak louder than words.” If his actions tell you that he wants you back, I don’t care if he spends all day telling everyone how happy he is without you, he wants you back. Period.
