How to Survive a Breakup in 3 Steps
Okay, so you’ve found yourself single again. But with all these emotions of loss, you might want to know how to survive a breakup. It’s normal to feel down and depressed after a relationship ends. It may seem cliche, but the healing process will take some time. However, here are a few things you can do to make you feel better faster and shortcut the healing time.
Why Breakup When You Don’t Have To?
First, accept that it has ended. This is really important to kick-starting the healing process. You don’t have to accept that it’s over permanently, but make your peace with the fact that the relationship has ended, at least for now. This will keep you from bombarding your ex with phone calls, text messages, and even stalking him. All that will only push him farther away. Both of you need some space, at least for now. So stop all contact and take some time to focus on you. This is a very critical step in surviving a breakup andregaining control of your life.
Second, allow yourself to mourn the passing of your relationship. It is normal to grieve when we lose someone or something that was close to us. So make to to properly move through all the feelings of loss you have. Some people will recommend jumping from one relationship to the next. Don’t do this. Rebound relationships are horrible. It’s not fair to jump straight into another person’s arms and force them to deal with all of the emotional baggage you will be bringing in with you. Learn to feel whole and complete as your own person and move through all the feelings you have about your breakup. Then when you are ready, you can start dating again. One of the most important things you need to know about how to survive a breakup is to take time to reestablish your identity as an individual person.
Third, stay busy. Do things to get yourself out of the house. Spend time with friends, take up a hobby or two, or enroll for a class at a community college. These are great ways to keep your mind off of your lack of a relationship and they help you moping around too much. It’s also good to get in the habit of doing things besides “couple activities” and start cultivating your own personal interests and becoming a more well-rounded person in general. Making new friends and learning new things are excellent ways to improve your life. Eventually your hobbies will make you very attractive to someone new down the road. If you want to know how to survive a breakup, just remember to keep yourself busy. It keeps your mind off the pain and helps you become a more interesting person in general.
Breakups suck. But these three things will really show you how to survive a breakup. I know it will be hard at first, but you just need to pick yourself up off the ground and force yourself to do these things at first. Eventually you will get the momentum going and everything will start to get easier. Trust me, I’ve been there. You can make it through this challenging time in your life.
